Can meditation help anxiety?

When you can learn to take time out from ‘the hamster wheel’ effect of anxiety and stress and practise meditation and mindfulness this allows your mind to slow.

A couple of techniques that have really worked for me include:

1. Guided Meditation – There are so many mindful apps out there now to help you focus and destress. Some I have tried and have found these useful – Breathe, Calm and Headspace.

2. Visualisation – when you’re travelling to work or in a busy office just stop, breathe, close your eyes and visualise yourself- walking in the forest, smelling the sea air etc even doing this for a few minutes just helps you ground again, even if you do look a little odd!

3. Aromatherapy Oils – After a stressful day my anxiety can be really high, heart beating and brain whirring. My most useful technique I reground myself is to put my phone down, run a bath and add essential oils like Frankincense, Sandalwood, Lavender relaxing and earthly smells help you totally come down from that stressful day. Relaxing music and focusing on breathing really help too.

4. Nature – Getting out into the fresh air, especially into a wood or quite space. Focusing on the clouds, the trees and breathing deeply. This is also known as ‘forest bathing’. Hear the sounds and smell the air it really is amazing therapy, that’s free too!
